TERRORISM. MARONI, NO OBSTACLES TO SABER’S EXPULSION

Sami Ben Khemais, alias Saber

09 June 2008 :

Internal Affairs Minister Roberto Maroni said there were no “obstacles” in adopting the expulsion provision for Tunisian citizen Essid Sami Ben Khemais, alias Saber.
Responding to journalists’ questions, the Minister explained that the European Court of Human Rights didn’t suspend the expulsion provision.
“What his lawyer said isn’t true. The Court did not pronounce on the provision," Maroni explained. He emphasised that he had the authorisation of the Italian magistracy and the Tunisian authorities.
This case, according to the Minister, again raises the issue of the impossibility of sending back “recognised terrorists of this kind” to their homeland if the court refuses, for countries that have the death penalty or practice torture. “Its a problem if the word spreads that the European Union is a 'good refuge' for terrorists”, Maroni observed.
