IRAN: DEATH SENTENCE FOR A POLITICAL PRISONER REAFFIRMED

24 September 2010 :

Iran's Supreme Court upheld a death sentence for political prisoner Mohammad Ali Haj-Aqai, 62, on the charges of Mohareb (waging war against God) and supporting the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
He was arrested on September 18, 2009. He was originally sentenced to death in April 2010, but his lawyer had filed an appeal.
The opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran, the coalition which includes the PMOI, said in a statement that the authorities had unsuccessfully pressured Haj-Aqai to take part in a "show trial" and make a "forced confession". Haj-Aqai was condemned to death in a "kangaroo court", it said.
