EP. CAPPATO AND PANNELLA ASK FOR THE SUSPENSION OF TROY DAVIS’ DEATH SENTENCE

Troy Anthony Davis

08 July 2008 :

Radical Euro Parliamentarians Marco Cappato and Marco Pannella are asking for the immediate suspension of Troy Davis’ death sentence. His execution is scheduled for the next few days in the US state of Georgia.
Davis was sentenced to death in 1991 for the murder of a police officer, based on evidence that was later retracted. He was repeatedly denied the possibility of presenting new evidence that could have exonerated him of the murder.
The two parliamentarians sent a letter to the "Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles" as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Franco Frattini, asking for the immediate suspension of the death sentence. Cappato and Pannella are pushing for the Italian Government to intervene and pressure the relevant authorities in Georgia.
Regarding the Radical Parliamentarians’ proposal, the ALDE group at the European Parliament will consider supporting Troy Davis between proposals for urgent themes in discussion at a full session in Strasbourg next week.
