June 19, 2026 - Florida. Dwight Eaglin, 50, White, re-sentenced to death

A man who murdered a correctional officer and a fellow inmate during an escape attempt from the Charlotte Correctional Institution in 2003 was re-sentenced to death on Friday, June 19.

Eaglin was convicted in 1998 for the 1st-degree murder of John Frederick Nichols. He was convicted and given a life sentence in 2001.

Eaglin then attempted a prison escape on June 11, 2003. The incident took place at the Charlotte Correctional Institution in Punta Gorda, Florida.

During the botched attempt, Eaglin ambushed and killed corrections officer Darla Kay Lathrem and fellow inmate Charles Fuston.

Eaglin was then sentenced to death on March 31, 2006 for the 2003 murders.

After a subsequent challenge to Florida’s death penalty laws, a Charlotte County jury returned a new recommendation for a death sentence on January 22, 2026.
