A Kern County jury has recommended death verdicts for Travis Frazier and Kenneth Nowlin, two Tehachapi prison inmates who murdered a fellow inmate. Evan Broderick, 20, was murdered on May 11, 2009, on a concrete exercise yard in the Security Housing Unit at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. The same jury earlier found Frazier and Nowlin, self-described “skinheads,” guilty of first-degree murder. Prosecutors said Frazier stabbed Broderick 24 times with an inmate-manufactured knife while Nowlin held Broderick and punched and kicked him. Frazier was already serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for the 2004 death of convenience store clerk during a botched robbery, while Nowlin was serving 46 years after being convicted in 2006 of attempted murder of a police officer following earlier convictions for robberies. Broderick was six months into a three-year sentence.(Sources: KBAK/KBFX, 02/07/2013)
