The Montagnard Foundation website reported the torture and execution of a Degar Montagnard Christian by Vietnamese police. The US-based foundation regularly denounces the repression of the ethnic and religious minority in Vietnam by the Communist authorities.
Y-Su Nie was executed by lethal injection on January 31. He had been arrested and taken to Buonmathout prison from his village, Buon Mbhao, in Dak Lac province's Mdrak district, on November 15, 2002. The Foundation said he had been arrested because he was "a Christian and land rights advocate."
Y-Su Nie was regularly beaten and tortured with electric shocks, and when he succumbed, he was taken daily out of prison to denounce Foundation president Kok Ksor and Christians in an attempt to intimidate Montagnard villagers and stop them supporting the Foundation, the report said.
On January 30, police gave him an injection, told him he "would soon die, but because the Vietnamese government was merciful we will allow you to see your family one last time" and released him. He died the next day, the report said.
