Renuka Kiran Shinde, 29, and Seema Mohan Gavit, 27, had their death sentences given to them in 2001 by a trial court confirmed by the Bombay High Court in India. Shinde and Gavit, sisters accused in the infamous Anjana Bai Gavit serial murder case, were convicted of the murders of five children: Santosh, Anjali, Shradha, Gauri and Pankaj. The duo was part of a gang that kidnapped children and used them for thefts. It was alleged that if the children outlived their use, they were killed. The murders of the children, aged between seven months and four years, had gone undetected for nearly six years. While there were no eyewitnesses in the case, the prosecution had relied on the testimony of Kiran Shinde, husband of Renuka, who turned witness.(Sources: Indian Express, 08/09/2004)
