Ninth January Protester

State media reported the execution of Erfan Kiani, a protester arrested in relation to the January 2026 protests in Isfahan. No previous reports had been published about his case, and little is known about him.

At least 30 of the January protesters have been sentenced to death and hundreds more are at risk of death penalty charges and sentences.

According to the Tasnim News Agency, Erfan Kiani was hanged at an unspecified location in Isfahan on 25 April 2026. He was sentenced to death by the Isfahan Revolutionary Court on the charge of “moharebeh (enmity against God) through drawing a weapon, namely a machete, for the purpose of intimidating and terrifying the public and showing off power, blocking streets, and inciting people to war and killing.”

Erfan was arrested on 8 January and had “confessed” to playing “a role in setting fire to public and private property.” He was named as “the leader of a group of enemy agents in Isfahan, whose actions led to the widespread destruction of public property, arson, attacks on police officers, and the blocking of both sides of the street.”

“Destruction of public and private property, arson, carrying and using Molotov cocktails, carrying a cold weapon (machete), blocking the path of vehicles, attacking officers, and causing fear and terror among citizens” are named as his “most significant criminal acts.”

No previous reports had been published about Erfah Kiani’s case, and no further information is available at this time.

According to the official report, 15 other individuals have been sentenced to prison terms in Isfahan.

Efan Kiani is the ninth protester executed in relation to the December 2025/January 2026 protests. The implementation of death sentences in Iran had been largely halted following the start of US and Israeli military attacks on 28 February. However, at least nine protesters, nine political prisoners affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and two men accused of espionage for Israel, have been executed since 18 March.

His co-defendants, Mohammad Amin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast were also hanged in Ghezelhesar Prison on 5 April, and Ali Fahim was hanged at the prison on 6 April.
