Lien Khui Thin and Nguyen Tuan Phuc, respectively former director and chairman of executive board of Epco company, had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, court officials said.No reason was given for the amnesty, which was signed by Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong on August 29, said an official from Ho Chi Minh City's People Court. The two were among six people sentenced to death in August 1999 for defrauding the state of more than 350 million dollars.
Two other members of the gang also had their death sentences commuted to life by an appeal court in January 2000, whilst the two remaining convicts were shot at dawn on July 11, 2003.
