It was reported that Nguyen Huu Toan, "a Vietnamese drug addict", was sentenced to death for murdering a friend "to steal and sell his jewellery to pay for his next fix", a Ho Chi Minh City court said.
Huu Toan was found guilty of stabbing to death 23-year-old Nguyen Lam Toan, also a drug addict, on May 2002. Huu Toan then sold Toan's gold bracelet and brought some heroin, an official from the city's People's Court said.
Police arrested him two days later.
