Canada's foreign affairs minister, Lloyd Axworthy, said he was shocked and disappointed by Vietnam's decision to execute a Canadian woman. He said Canada would take a hard look at its ties with Vietnam as a result. Axworthy noted that Canada had called on the Vietnamese government to show clemency in the case, and said he was surprised to learn that the request had been ignored and the woman had been executed. Raymond Chan, Canada's secretary of state for the Asia-Pacific region, said Ottawa had provided Vietnam with information suggesting Nguyen might have been tricked into transporting the heroin.(see Canada)(Sources: Radio Canada International monitored by BBC, 27/04/2000)
