a Barisal court has sentenced to death two brothers, Shahjahan Bairagi and Shahidul Islam Sahed Bairagi, for slaughtering their sister and her four children in Barisal’s Mehendiganj Upazila in 2008. Shahjahan is currently absconding. Apart from the death penalty, the two were fined Tk 5,000 or six months of rigorous imprisonment in case of failing to pay the fine. The case details said Tanjila Begum and her four children – ‘Anjuman’, ‘Sathi’, ‘Jannat’ and ‘Ferdousi’ – were slaughtered in their house at Khalishar Uttarparh area at Mehendiganj Upazila’s Bhashanchar Union on June 30, 2008.Local night watchman Nuruzzaman had filed the murder case with the Mehendiganj Police Station the following day accusing several unnamed persons.
Police later arrested Tanjila’s two brothers Shahjahan and Shahidul for their suspected involvement in the murders.
The two siblings confessed to their crime. Defense lawyer Shamsuzzman Nayan said they would move the High Court against the verdict.
