USA - Tennessee. The failed execution of Tony Carruthers

May 21, 2026 - Tennessee. The execution of Tony Carruthers, scheduled for 10:00 am on 21 May, was halted after more than an hour of failed attempts to insert the intravenous lines required for the lethal injection.

Tony Carruthers, 57, Black, is on death row for the kidnapping and murder of three people in Memphis in 1994: Marcellos Anderson, his mother Delois Anderson and Frederick Tucker. He has always maintained his innocence, arguing that there is no direct physical evidence and that the 1996 trial (in which he represented himself) convicted him without real evidence.

At the maximum-security prison in Nashville, staff found a vein for the primary line but were unable to insert a second one, the so-called ‘backup’, which is mandatory under Tennessee protocol. After repeated attempts on his arms, feet, neck and even an attempt on his chest, with Carruthers moaning and bleeding, the execution was halted. Governor Bill Lee granted a one-year stay: the state will not attempt a new execution before 2027.

According to the abolitionist group Reprieve, Carruthers is at least the seventh prisoner in the US to survive a failed execution attempt due to problems with the lethal injection. The case reignites the debate on the feasibility and humanity of this method, already under strain due to difficulties in sourcing drugs and increasingly contested protocols.
