SOMALIA: GALMUDUG EXECUTES MAN FOR 2025 MURDER IN GURIEL DISTRICT
October 14, 2025: Authorities in the Galmudug region on October 9, 2025 executed a man convicted of a premeditated killing, marking the latest enforcement of capital punishment under Somali law. Nuur Hirsi Warsame was executed by firing squad after the Galmudug Supreme Court confirmed his conviction for the intentional murder of Ahmed Wali Mohamed Salad in July 2025. The killing occurred in Dhagahbuur, a village in Guriceel district, central Galgaduud region. Officials from the judiciary, security forces, local clerics, and relatives from both families witnessed the execution, a measure the regional government said was intended to ensure transparency and reinforce public confidence in the legal system. A spokesperson for the Office of the Galmudug Attorney General said the punishment was carried out in accordance with the Somali Penal Code and reflected the region’s commitment to upholding justice and preventing serious crimes. “This serves as a clear warning to anyone considering grave offences such as intentional murder,” the spokesperson said. “Galmudug is determined to protect the rule of law and ensure public safety.” The Supreme Court’s decision followed weeks of investigation and hearings that determined Warsame acted deliberately in the killing. Regional officials described the case as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law and restore confidence in Somalia’s judicial institutions. While executions remain permitted under Somali law, human rights groups have often urged the government to commute such sentences. Galmudug authorities maintain that enforcing the law deters violent crime and ensures justice for victims’ families. (Source: Hiiran, 09/10/2025)
