The House Judiciary Committee voted 15-4 to reject HB 338. The bill would require indisputable DNA or video proof of a person's guilt in a capital crime before the defendant could be sentenced to death.
A special tribunal in Bangladesh on June 28, 2026 gave the death sentence in absentia to three police officers, including the former police chief of the capital Dhaka, in connection with the killing of protesters during a 2024 uprising that led to the collapse of the government.
