The House Judiciary Committee voted 15-4 to reject HB 338. The bill would require indisputable DNA or video proof of a person's guilt in a capital crime before the defendant could be sentenced to death.
Twelve individuals, who were found guilty over the murder of former Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer in 2022, were sentenced to death on February 11, 2026.
