UAE: TAXI DRIVER'S DEATH PENALTY COMMUTED TO 5 YEARS IN JAIL

04 September 2007 :

a taxi driver death's sentence was commuted to five years by the Appeal Court of the United Arab Emirates. The Appeal Court reduced Afghan Shaah Miyah's death sentence because he did not use violence against the victim. Last year, a Filipino visiting the UAE took a taxi from Ajman to go to a shopping mall in Sharjah. The taxi driver drove her to a room in the industrial area in Sharjah where she accused him of raping her twice. He was sentenced to death by the Sharia Court, however the Appeal Court found that the woman did not resist and went with him even though she knew he had changed route.
