TUNISIA: FIRST DEATH SENTENCES AFTER REVOLUTION

11 May 2012 :

Two men accused of rape and murder, were sentenced to death this afternoon by the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal of Tunis. This is the first death sentences issued in Tunisia after the fall of the dictatorship, in January of 2011.
According to the site Tunisie Numerique crimes date back to 2008. In the same process a third defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Tunisian Penal Code still provides for the death penalty for particular offenses such as, for example, attack the integrity of the state as a result of high treason. The death penalty has not been enforced for many years in the country. In June 2011, Tunisia acceded to the Statute of the International Criminal Court, which excludes the death penalty.
