The Tunisian Coalition Against the Death Penalty (CTCPM) on Tuesday called on the Presidency to accelerate the ratification of the Second Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in order to definitively abolish the death penalty. During a press conference held in Tunis on the occasion of the 15th World Day against the death penalty, the CTCPM expressed its "fear" of the increase in death sentences in Tunisia, "due in particular to the adoption of the law in 2015 counter-terrorism that has restored this practice. "
The coalition president, Chokri Latif, has also returned to the discriminatory use of the death penalty, which he believes is inextricably linked to poverty, as it affects the poor most.
He added: "Socio-economic inequalities compromise access to justice for those sentenced to death at all stages of the process, in particular because they make access to effective legal assistance difficult".
According to the same source, 68% of those sentenced to death until 2012 were temporary workers, unemployed and farmers. Most of them come from the most marginalized areas of the Republic.
Moreover, in Tunisia since 1956 there have been 135 death sentences, most of them for political reasons.
Latif called on the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP) to amend the Organic Law No. 2015-26 of 7 August 2015 on the fight against terrorism and the repression of money laundering.
According to him, the goal is to respect international standards for the protection of human rights.
