TANZANIA: 75 DEATH SENTENCES COMMUTED: KIKWETE

19 November 2009 :

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete said at a conference in Rome he had commuted 75 death sentences to life imprisonment “just few days ago.”
He explained that many Tanzanians support the death penalty. However, “the death penalty was only being used as a toothless dog. More than 200 people were on the death row but none had been executed.” “The law is there but for a long time it has not been applied," said Kikwete.
