MALAYSIA: TRAFFICKER'S DEATH SENTENCE REINSTATED

14 August 2007 :

a petty trader from Nigeria was devastated when the Federal Court, in Malaysia, overturned her acquittal, and reinstated her death sentence for trafficking. Federal Court judge Datuk Ariffin Zakaria, who was leading a five-member panel, said the decision was unanimous. Ayoromi Helen was charged with trafficking 1,713.9g of heroin at the Drug Detection Unit office, in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, on May 7, 1997. She was convicted at the Alor Star High Court, and was sentenced to death on Nov 4, 1999. The Court of Appeal on Oct 21, 2004, however, overturned the High Court's decision, and granted Ayoromi an acquittal and discharge. Despite the decision, Ayoromi was immediately arrested pending the disposal of the prosecution's appeal.
