IRAQ. PANNELLA, HUNGER STRIKE AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY FOR TAREQ AZIZ

Marco Pannella

09 July 2008 :

as of tonight, Marco Pannella is on a hunger strike against the likely death sentence and execution of Tareq Aziz, ex vice prime minister of the deposed Iraqi regime. Aziz's trial began on April 29 in Baghdad.
Pannella announced this at Spoleto, where the Radicals held an iniziative in the piazza for World Tibet Day, celebrated the world over to coincide with the birthday of the Dalai Lama.
“We are aware of the crimes committed by Tareq Aziz, that he is maybe even more guilty than Saddam Hussein. None however can touch Cain because otherwise there will be more victims of the death penalty in the world,’ Pannella said.
From the city that holds that festival of Two worlds, Pannella underlined the “huge value of civility and of the Tibetan culture.”
“It’s a shame that the Dalai Lama can’t be here with us to celebrate this occasion.”
The President of the Radicals Bruno Mellano remembered the situation in Tibet and spoke of the Chinese repression.
