IRAN - The execution of Ahmadreza Djalali has been postponed.

Ahmadreza Djalali

16 December 2020 :

The execution  of Ahmadreza Djalali has been postponed. His execution was scheduled today at dawn. It is the third time that the sentence has been suspended and this gives hope that diplomatic negotiations are proceeding for an exchange of prisoners to which the Iranian government had said it was available in recent days, although not making a direct reference to the case of the Iranian naturalized Swedish doctor.
His lawyer in Tehran warned his wife Vida Mehrannia who is in Stockholm that today's execution was suspended and the solitary confinement in Evin prison extended: "I have no further information." Also the researcher and colleague Luca Ragazzoni has specified that there are, for now, no details on what will happen in the next few days. Djalali, who worked at Upo in Novara from 2011 to 2015, until shortly before his arrest, has been detained since 25 April 2016 on charges of spying on behalf of Israel.
Last week a 25-hour international academic marathon was held, organized by the Upo of Novara, to ask for the suspension of the sentence. Scientists and academics, European diplomacy and the main international human rights organizations have lined up in favor of Djalali.
