IRAN: 24 PEOPLE EXECUTED IN A WEEK, 17 FOR DRUG RELATED CRIMES

Between 20 and 26 August 2013, Iran executed at least twenty-four people, seventeen convicted of drug related charges.
Between 20 and 21 August, two young men were hanged in the prison of Mashhad, reported the Iranian daily newspaper Khorrasan. One of the prisoners, identified only as Y., was reportedly hanged on 21 August. He was convicted of murdering another man in 2004. The other man, identified as M. and convicted of another murder in 2004, was hanged on 20 August.
Between 21 and 22 August 2013, two people were hanged in the prison of Ahwaz, the judiciary of Khuzestan reported. The prisoners, who were both convicted of murder, were identified as Reza R. and Ali Sh.
On 25 August, according to the official website of the Iranian judiciary, three prisoners were hanged in the prison of Kermanshah. The prisoners, who were identified as A. M., H. B. and J. S., were convicted of murder.
Between 22 and 26 August 2013, at least seventeen convicted of drug related charges were hanged in seven different Iranian cities.
On 22 August, according to state media, three prisoners were hanged in Ardebil. The prisoners, who were not identified by name, were reportedly convicted of: possession of one kilogram and 17 grams of heroin; possession and trafficking of 3 kilograms and 251 grams of heroin; and participation in trafficking and possession of 9 kilograms and 878 grams of opium. Five other prisoners were hanged in Arak Prison, Mehr news agency reported. The prisoners were identified as: A. K., 25, convicted of possession of 598 grams of crack; P. Y., 24, convicted of possession and trafficking of 890 grams of crystal; A. A., 37, convicted of trading 1,800 grams of crack; A. T., 35, and M. A., 29, convicted of possession and trafficking of 2,300 grams of crack. Another prisoner was hanged in public in the town of Hendijan, FARS reported. The prisoner, who was not identified by name, was reportedly convicted of possession of 5 kilograms and 50 grams of crack.
On 24 August, one man charged of drug smuggling was hanged in the prison of Ahvaz, Mehr news agency reported. Jamnews identified the prisoner as Saeed Geshtil, who was convicted of possession and trafficking of 11 kilograms of heroin.
On 25 August, one man, who was not identified by name, was hanged in the prison of Isfahan, Iranian national broadcasting reported. The prisoner was convicted of possession of 2,450 grams of heroin and 1,770 grams of crack.
On 26 August, according to the Iranian national broadcasting, one prisoner, who was not identified by name, was hanged in the prison of Ardebil. He was 56 year old and was convicted of possession of 991 grams of heroin. On the same day, the Iranian regime's judiciary in the city of Qom declared that five prisoners were hanged in the city's prisons, state-run daily Aser-e Iran reported. Mostafa Barzegar Ganji, the city's prosecutor, did not identify the prisoners but he said all had been arrested on drug related charges.
