DEATH PENALTY: D'ELIA- INCREASE EFFORT TO ATTAIN ABOLITION

Sergio D'Elia, General Secretary of HOC

16 September 2008 :

"We need to increase our efforts to consolidate these results and move from a moratorium to the abolition of the death penalty," Hands Off Cain Secretary Sergio D'Elia said in response to Ban Ki-Moon's report on the death penalty around the world. "Regarding the next General Assembly, we ask that the text of the new resolution to be presented is strengthened politically with two provisions: the abolition of State secrecy on the death penalty that directly causes the majority of executions in most countries. Secondly, the creation of a Special Envoy of the Secretary General to not only monitor but also to promote and accelerate internal processes in various countries to satisfy the United Nations request of a moratorium on executions, beyond a greater transparency in the death penalty system."
