CHINA: UNIVERSITY RESEARCHER SENTENCED TO DEATH WITH REPRIEVE OVER HOMICIDE

07 February 2024 :

Jiang Wenhua, a former researcher at Fudan University, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on February 1, 2024 for intentional homicide.
The sentence was handed down to Jiang by the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court. Jiang has also been deprived of his political rights for life, and restrictions on commutation were imposed on him.
During his tenure as a researcher at the School of Mathematical Sciences at the university, Jiang, facing difficulties in his work, harbored resentment toward the Party secretary of the school, who was surnamed Wang. On June 7, 2021, Jiang entered Wang's office with a knife and inflicted multiple stabs on Wang, leading to his death, said the court.
Jiang has been suffering from recurrent depressive disorder and thus had diminished criminal responsibility in the case, according to investigation.
The court held that Jiang planned the crime and his methods were brutal, with severe consequences, and the verdict was made in accordance with the law, taking into account several factors such as his diminished criminal responsibility and surrender.
