The Supreme Court on 6 October 2020 commuted the death penalties of three convicts to imprisonment till natural death in the Gopal Krishna Muhuri murder case. The three convicts spared the death penalty are Alamgir Kabir, Toslim Uddin Montu and Azam.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Muhammad Imman Ali reduced the death sentence of the three convicts after hearing their appeals against the High Court verdict.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta confirmed the verdict. During the appeal hearing, Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for Alamgir while Hellal Uddin Mollah stood for Montu and Azam.
Gopal Krishana Muhuri, principal of Nazirhat College in Chittagong, was murdered at his house at Jamal Khan road in the port city on 16 November 2001 by Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists.
The Appellate Division on 29 September completed the hearing of the appeal and fixed 6 October for a pronounced verdict.
On 6 February 2003, a Chittagong speedy trial tribunal announced the death sentence of four, life imprisonment and Tk 50 thousands fine for four, and acquitted another four accused in the case.
Among the four death sentence holders, Gittu Nachir died in a ‘crossfire’ with Rapid action Battalion (RAB) in 2005.
In July 2006, the High Court upheld the verdict of the speedy trial tribunal for the three death sentence holders.
Montu and Azam Alamgir filed appeals against the High Court verdict in 2006. Alamgir followed suit in 2008.
