29 October 2023 :

A court in Bangladesh on October 26, 2023 sentenced five members of a family to death for the murder of Ayesha Akhtar in Habiganj’s Chunarughat.
The verdict in the case was delivered by Judge Md Zahidul Haque of the Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
Ayesha was the wife of Rasel Mia and lived in Sadekpur village.
Rasel, 25, his mother Tahera Khatun, 60, his two sisters Husna Akhtar, 28, and Ruji Begum, 35, and his brother Kausar Mia, 37, were all sentenced to death.
Four of the convicts were in court to hear the verdict, but Kausar Mia was absconding.
The case documents say that on Sept 15, 2016, the pregnant Ayesha was beaten badly by her husband and his family over a demand for a Tk 100,000 dowry. At one point during the beating, she died.
The following day, Ayesha’s father Abdul Sattar filed a case against Rasel and four members of his family at Chunarughat Police Station.
Advocate Abul Mansur, who represented the plaintiff, said he was satisfied with the verdict and asked for it to be implemented swiftly.
Advocate MA Majid, representing the defence, said they were not happy with the verdict and would be taking the case to a higher court.
