22 April 2004 :

Van Duc Vo, a Vietnamese-American man accused of plotting to blow up the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok in 2001, was ordered extradited to Thailand to face terrorism-related charges.
US Magistrate Judge Arthur Nakazato mulled his decision for 16 months before approving Thailand's request to extradite 44-year-old Vo.
Vo belonged to a group based in the Little Saigon in Garden Grove of southern California, which is dedicated to overthrowing the Vietnamese government. Vo's attorney, Michael Mayock, said the decision was tantamount to a death sentence and vowed to appeal. Prosecutors said that on June 19, 2001, Vo and another man placed a backpack with explosives outside the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok and tossed a brown box over the fence. The box reportedly contained about 5 Kg of diesel fuel and ammonium nitrate, the same type of mixture used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings. The packages were linked to a detonator that was to have been activated by a cellular phone, but the detonator actually malfunctioned and the homemade bombs failed to explode. Vo was arrested on Oct. 12, 2001, after he getting off a plane at the John Wayne Airport, Orange County.
