April 16, 2025 - Texas. Larry Estrada has death sentence commuted to life
On April 16, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted relief to death row inmate Larry Estrada, 46, Hispanic, based on his claim of intellectual disability under Atkins v. Virginia, and ordered his sentence be changed to life in prison. Estrada was convicted in a 1988 Harris County convenience store robbery and murder. He was 18 at the time of the crime and 19 when sentenced to death
Nineteen people have been removed from death row in Texas since 2017 due to evidence of intellectual disability. More than one-third of those cases were tried in Harris County.
