June 27, 2025 - California. Adel Ramos' death sentence formalised
A press release from Sacramento County District Attorney (prosecutor) Thien Ho informs that on 27 June Judge James Arguelles formalised the death sentence that had been decided on 27 March (see) by a popular jury against Adel Ramos. Ramos, 51, Hispanic, pleaded guilty to killing a young police officer, Tara O'Sullivan, 26, white, and the attempted murder of another officer. Officers had responded to a report from Ramos' neighbours for “domestic disturbance”, but knowing the police were coming Ramos hid, and opened fire from behind cover. In California from 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a moratorium on executions, but this obviously does not prevent the prosecution from continuing to pursue death sentences for cases deemed particularly serious. Ramos becomes one of over 600 prisoners currently sentenced in California, although executions remain indefinitely suspended. California has not carried out executions since 2006 and the San Quentin death chamber has been dismantled.
