Tran Trung Dung, 23, was sentenced to death by firing squad in Vietnam after being convicted of murdering his girlfriend in a jealous rage. Suspecting that his lover, Ha Thu Phuong, was having an affair, Dung stabbed her to death with a knife at his home in the northern province of Phu Tho on December 31, 2003. Dung, the son of a district judge, was found guilty of murder on by the provincial People's Court after initial proceedings on May 25 were cancelled because he refused to speak. He was subsequently examined by medical experts for signs of mental illness but was given a clean bill of health, clearing the way for his re-trial.
