The West Bengal government was preparing for the state's first hanging in decades.
It was reported that Dhanonjoy Chatterjee could be hanged some between June 23 and June 26.
In December 1989, Chatterjee, a caretaker, raped and then strangled 14-year-old Hetal Parekh. Her mother had left for the adjacent Laxminarayan temple leaving the apartment keys with Chatterjee.
He had been told to give the keys to Hetal when she returned. A trial court had first sentenced Dhanonjoy to "death by hanging" in August 1991. The Calcutta High Court upheld the verdict in August 1992.
There followed a similar verdict in the Supreme Court in January 1994.
