The Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) launched an exercise to mobilise public opinion against the death sentence of Dhananjay Chatterjee, a man convicted of raping and murdering a teenage girl in West Bengal. The AHRC was asking people to send a "strong letter" to the Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam requesting him to commute the death sentence of Chatterjee, who was in a Kolkata jail. Kalam was considering a mercy petition for Chatterjee, who raped and killed a 14-year-old girl in 1990 and was sentenced to death by hanging.(Sources: Hindustan Times, 31/07/2004)
