29 August 2004 :
The high court, Indore bench, India, converted the death sentence awarded to Ganesh of Gauri Nagar into life imprisonment. He had been sentenced to death by the Fourth Additional Sessions Judge M D Muvel on July 12, 2004, after being convicted of killing his second wife Jyoti and four children from the first wife on the night of April 9, 2002. The Sessions Court had sent the case to the High Court for confirmation of sentence. The High Court division bench, in its judgment on August 26, observed that the convict's second wife was from an orphanage hence he was a social outcast. Also he was indebted by about Rs 40 thousand. Given the circumstances, the court ruled that the crime could not be termed as a preplanned murder.
