The crimes were the same

16 September 2004 :

The crimes were the same. But while one man was hanged in August in Calcutta, India, another who committed a similar crime was roaming free. Coincidentally, the judge hearing both the cases was the same. The trial court of judge R.N. Kali, who had sentenced Dhananjoy Chatterjee to death in 1991, held Goutam Biswas guilty of raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl. The judge sentenced Biswas to life imprisonment. But Biswas moved the Calcutta High Court, which granted him interim bail. After 12 years, his case was still being heard. Chatterjee was never granted bail, his punishment was upheld by the higher courts. He was hanged 14 years after Kali's judgement.
