Santosh Bariyar was sentenced to death by an Additional Sessions court in India after it found him guilty of being the mastermind behind the murder of former national junior tennis champion R Kartikraj.
Two of his accomplices, Sanjeevkumar Roy and Santoshkumar Roy, were sentenced to life imprisonment, while Kumargaurav Shrimanibhushan, who became a witness for the prosecution, was released by the court.
Bariyar was awarded the death penalty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and also under Section 364 (A) (kidnapping for murder).
It was heard in court that Kartikraj, 21, was kidnapped for ransom and brutally murdered on August 8, 2001, at Wadgaon-Dhayari.
It was alleged that Bariyar, who used live with Kartikraj and was well acquainted with him, had invited him for dinner and strangulated him. His chopped body parts were thrown into a river.
The police had recovered a leg and established the identity after conducting DNA tests.
