On May 3, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said the Government should consider the death sentence for atrocities against women. And Home minister L K Advani proposed capital punishment for rape. The proposals under consideration include a public shaming/ostracism of the accused, and even the death penalty and severe enhancement of punishment where the accused is also HIV-positive and has passed on the infection to the victim. This seems to have struck a chord with the National Commission of Women (NCW) which is preparing a detailed draft on amendments to the "obsolete" rape laws.
