Le Thanh Van, a woman convicted of poisoning 13 people with cyanide in order to rob them, was sentenced to death. Van, 48, told the People's Court in southern Binh Duong province she went on her killing spree between 1998 to 2001 to steal money and possessions worth more than 15,000 dollars.Van, who spent a year at medical school in Ho Chi Minh City, put cyanide into the drinks or food of her victims. All complained of dizziness, nausea and breathing difficulties before dying. Police confiscated 2.802 grams (0.09 ounces) of cyanide she kept in her purse. As little as 0.15 of a gram can kill a person.
Van was arrested twice between 1998 and 2000 but was released for lack of evidence. She was finally kept in jail after poisoning a woman in the southern province of Binh Phuoc in August 2001.
