A 56-year-old man convicted in connection with the armed attack on the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran, has been executed in one of the capital’s prisons. The assault resulted in the death of a member of Azerbaijan's diplomatic staff.

According to information received by Hengaw, the execution took place on May 21, 2025, following a final ruling by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which upheld the initial death sentence issued by a Tehran criminal court.

The official Mizan News Agency, affiliated with Iran's judiciary, reported that on January 27, 2023, the assailant entered the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, opened fire on the staff, and killed one diplomat while injuring several others. The report did not disclose the name of the executed person or the specific prison where the execution was carried out.

According to the same source, the assailant claimed during interrogation that he believed his wife was present in the embassy and had refused to meet with him. He stated: “I thought my wife was inside the embassy and unwilling to see me, so I went there with a Kalashnikov rifle I had previously acquired.”

No further details have been released regarding the legal proceedings or the identity of the executed prisoner. Hengaw has identified the man as Yasin Hosseinzadeh, IHR as Yasin (Safar) Hosseinzadeh.
