January 9, 2026 - IRAN. Family of 3 killed in Karaj on January 9

Bijan Mostafavi, Zahra Bani-Amerian, Danial Mostafavi

Three members of a Turkish family, including one woman—Bijan Mostafavi, Zahra Bani-Amerian, and Danial Mostafavi—originally from Sonqor in Kermanshah Province and residing in Karaj, were killed during popular protests in the city after being shot directly by forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to information Hengaw received on January 15, Bijan Mostafavi, 55, a retired education employee originally from Sonqor and a resident of Karaj; his wife Zahra Bani-Amerian, 48, a retired Social Security employee; and their son Danial Mostafavi, 19, a computer science student, were shot by government forces on the evening of January 9, 2026. The family was inside their personal vehicle during protests in Karaj when they were targeted by gunfire and killed.

The bodies of the three deceased family members were transferred to Sonqor and buried under heavy security measures in recent days, without the family’s consent and under pressure from government forces.

The burials took place before 6:00 a.m.

Davoud Mostafavi, the eldest son of the family, was also present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and survived despite being hit by gunfire. However, no information has so far been released regarding his physical condition.
