06 March 2007 :
a soldier, Sepoy Suresh Chandra Behera of 28 Rashtriya Rifles, was sentenced to death by a court martial in Jammu and Kashmir, according to an army headquarters source. It is rare for an army court martial in India to issue such a sentence. A soldier has the right to appeal against the sentence to both superior authorities in the army and to a civil court. The death penalty was awarded for fatally shooting Lt Colonel Saket Saxena on October 31 last year. Army headquarters is yet to spell out the circumstances of the death penalty or confirm the sentence.(Sources: Calcutta Telegraph, 02/03/2007)
