INDIA. NO CONSENSUS ON ABOLISHING DEATH PENALTY, HOME MINISTER

09 July 2005 :

in the absence of a consensus on whether the death sentence should be abolished, Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil said the law would continue to be put into practice in its current form.
"There was no agreement on whether the death sentence should go (or not) as both views had strong proponents," Patil said on reforming the criminal justice system. "Some felt the death sentence should be co-terminus with the life of the accused while another view was the state couldn't take away the life of an individual," he said.
