Additional District and Sessions Judge Anandarup Jaydeep Sharma sentenced Rama Swami to death for killing his wife Suryakanti in April 2006. The court also awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to the co-accused, identified as Rajiv. Rama Swami hacked the victim into pieces and burnt the body in a tandoor that he used to make bread. A godman had allegedly told Ramaswami that his bakery business would grow if he killed his wife and offered her blood to a deity.
