INDIA: HAWARA FILES APPEAL

04 September 2007 :

the prime accused in the Beant Singh assassination case in India, Jagtar Singh Hawara, filed an appeal against his conviction and death sentence in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The case would be heard on August 30, 2007, before the division bench of justices Jasbir Singh and Nirmal Yadav. Eleven lawyers signed the memorandum of appeal which was submitted by counsel AS Chahal. The appeal contested the trial court orders, asserting there was no direct evidence produced by the prosecution to connect any of the appellants with the alleged crime, besides relying on circumstantial evidence. The appeal referred to a number of infirmities in the prosecution case including the unexplained and inordinate delay in registration of FIR.
