INDIA. GOVERNMENT: NO DEATH PENALTY TO ABU SALEM

the Indian Government declared that extradited underworld don Abu Salem would not be punished with the death penalty or with a prison term exceeding 25 years, as per the guarantee given to the Portuguese Government prior to extradition.
"According to the Portuguese Constitution these guarantees were required before his extradition could be processed", Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed said. Salem was facing the charge of supplying arms and ammunitions for the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.
