a division bench of the Kerala High Court, India, commuted into life imprisonment the death penalties of four people accused in the Panniyannur Chandran murder case in 1996.Allowing in part the appeals filed by the accused, Justice J B Koshi and Justice K R Udayabanu granted a life sentence to Arayankandy Sukumaran, Myladimmel Surendran, Kaithulaparambath Preman and Kunjiparambath Purushothaman, all Communist Party of India (CPI) workers.
The victim, a BJP Kannur District secretary, also a suspect in the murder of CPI worker Mammen Vasu, was beaten to death while riding a motorcycle with his wife on May 25, 1996.
