the Karnataka High Court, India, upheld a lower court order sentencing to death Shiva and Jadeswamy, two villagers from Kollegal, Chamarajnagar district, for raping and murdering an 18-year-old girl.The court had on October 27 upheld a ruling by the Chamarajanagar Sessions Court convicting them of the charges but had waited before passing sentence. The Ramapura police had arrested the two for raping and murdering a girl at Badriyyanahalli on October 15, 2001. The girl's mother had found the strangled body of her daughter in a field. Some of the villagers had restrained the accused and handed them over to the police.
