INDIA: DEATH SENTENCE FOR KILLING SON

a CRPF deputy commandant, along with three others, was sentenced to death by a local court in Moga, India, for allegedly killing his own son. Additional District and Sessions Judge B S Sandhu awarded the sentence to CRPF deputy commandant and father of the deceased, Harjinder Singh, Manjit Singh, alias Sodhi, Harvinder Singh and Satwant Singh for allegedly killing Baghal Singh, son of the deputy commandant. The court acquitted two others, Jugraj Singh from whose house Baghal Singh went missing, and Summandeep Kaur of Delhi, due to lack of evidence. Baghal Singh, a student of Lala Lajpat Rai Polytechnic Institute, went missing on January 21, 2003. Police recovered the beheaded body of a boy about 10 days later from the Abohar Canal which was later identified as that of Baghal Singh by his mother. Police investigation revealed that Harjinder Singh had refused to pay Rs 5,000 per month to take care of his son's academic expenses.
