the Committee to Oppose the Death Penalty in Pondicherry, India, urged the Central Government to take immediate steps to put an end to capital punishment in the country.A resolution to that effect was adopted at a conference on 'Eradication of death penalty', Committee Coordinator G. Sugumaran said in a statement.
Another resolution urged the Government to accept the recommendation of the President and to cancel the death penalty given to 50 people languishing in the prisons around the country. Resolutions urging AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi to intervene in the issue to abolish capital punishment and another asking the Tamilnadu Government to withdraw the POTA cases against Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P. Nedumaran, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and R. Gopal, editor of the Tamil magazine 'Nakkeeran' were also adopted at the meeting.
