19 November 2007 :
in Kansas City, before U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner, a jury recommended today that Lisa M. Montgomery should receive the death penalty.Montgomery, 39, was convicted on the 22nd of kidnapping Victoria Jo Stinnett by cutting her from her mother's womb in order to claim her as her own child. She then transported the baby across the state line from Missouri to Kansas. The mother, Bobbie Jo Stinnett, was 23, and 8 months pregnant when was killed.
Evidence presented at the trial demonstrated that Montgomery met Stinnett online and arranged a meeting at Stinnett's home under the pretext of wanting to buy a rat terrier. On December 17, Montgomery strangled the baby's mother, with a rope and then used a kitchen knife to cut her infant daughter from Stinnet's womb. Montgomery was arrested the next day in Kansas, where she was showing off the newborn as her own. Baby Victoria Jo is now a healthy soon-to-be-3-year-old who has been reunited with her father, Zeb Stinnett.
